Congratulations 2019 Scholarship Recipients!
Dear donors and members of the Chicano Latino Alumni Association,
My name is Rodrigo Leiva, and I am deeply grateful to all of you for selecting me as a recipient of the 2019 CLAA Scholarship.
As immigrants, a constant feeling of not belonging stays in the back of our heads for a while. After arriving in the United States, I did not believe that I could ever find a place to call “home” ever again, much less attend a top-university. However, hope is a powerful tool that my family has never lost. Now, I am very thankful for every single opportunity I have been given, especially this one.
CLAA, much like Berkeley itself, has proven to me that I made the right decision attending here, even when I thought it was impossible. Thanks to this scholarship, I will be able to put a weight off my parents’ shoulders financially and even emotionally. I will always be glad to give back to my mother and father through my education and my efforts to lower its cost for them. Both of them left their lives behind in our home country almost four years ago, choosing to start over again just to protect me and my little brother and give us a better future here, and this is the least I can do to thank them.
Whether it goes towards tuition, housing or books, I know this scholarship will help me achieve the academic goals I have set for myself, but even more importantly, it will show my family that I appreciate the sacrifice they have done for me. In the same way, I cannot express how grateful I am with the CLAA for giving me this opportunity and proving that I do have a place to call home no matter where I go, and people who can help me along the way.
May God bless you all and thank you.
My name is Laura Martinez and thanks to the CLAA scholarship, I will be able to pursue my studies at Cal with more ease. I cannot express how thankful I am for this financial support that will help me, a Mexican immigrant, complete my undergraduate education. This scholarship will allow me to continue to support other marginalized communities, like mine.
Thank you for the scholarship, I have very grateful to have received it. This scholarship will help me focus more on my academics and to not worry about the finances that come with university. Thank you again for the help.
This scholarship will help me and my family deal with the financial burdens of receiving higher education. Coming from a low-income background, I was always fearful and hesitant of even applying for college, let alone, finance it. This scholarship gives me hope that I can achieve my dreams in higher education and beyond. It also serves as a reminder that I am not alone and that there are people that want to see me succeed.
