“The 2023 UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (UCB CLAA) Scholarship Program is sponsored by an amazing group of donors, foundations and CLAA regional chapters. Thanks to their contributions, UCB CLAA Scholarships will support undergraduate and graduate Chicanx Latinx students at Cal who demonstrate need for tuition, books, equipment, and living expenses. Our application for the 2023 cycle is now open and is due on August 27, 2023.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of need, merit, and special considerations decided by donors. A needs assessment and overall financial aid package will be evaluated by UCB CLAA. Scholarship awards are based upon the following primary factors:
Matriculation at UC Berkeley with undergraduate or graduate standing
Financial need
Commitment to the Latinx community
Leadership potential
Exceptional academic and professional potential

“In June 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, bringing news of freedom to enslaved Black people, more than two months after the Civil War had ended and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. On Monday, June 19th, we commemorate Juneteenth(link is external), a significant milestone in American history that marks the end of slavery.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, holds deep cultural and historical significance. While President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Act(link is external), recognizing today as a federal holiday, Juneteenth has long been celebrated by Black communities, uniting people through calls to action and liberation alongside celebratory parades and gatherings. ” Via diversity.berkeley.edu/juneteenth

UC Berkeley’s Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion Dania Matos and other leaders provided this campus statement about Pride Month:
“June marks Pride Month, a time that reminds us to uplift our LGBTQ+ community – our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and so many more community members that cannot be fully captured in a single acronym. Recognizing that our communities hold an incredibly and beautifully expansive range of intersecting identities and experiences, we celebrate the diverse expressions of gender and sexuality in our campus community. We are also reminded that, in a time of relentless anti-queer, anti-trans, and anti-drag legislation, rhetoric, and violence, we must continue to fight for the safety, dignity, and rights of all LGBTQ+ people.
Celebration as resistance
On June 28, 1970, the first Pride marches commemorated the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, in which LGBTQ+ patrons of the Stonewall Inn, including key leaders such as Stormé DeLarverie, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sylvia Rivera, fought against police brutality. These marches brought LGBTQ+ communities together to demonstrate for equal rights and continue fighting against discrimination. In the face of institutional violence and erasure, Pride was, and still is, resistance through visibility, joy, and celebration. ”
The theme is Professional Development and we have selected Who Moved My Cheese? By Dr. Spencer Johnson.
You have from now to read the book and join us on June 22,2023 at 7:00 PM PST to discuss the book together. RSVP here.
“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a simple parable that reveals profound truths. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a “Maze” and look for “Cheese” to nourish them and make them happy…..When you come to see “The Handwriting on the Wall,” you can discover for yourself how to deal with change, so that you can enjoy less stress and more success (however you define it) in your work and in your life.
